When it comes to the city of lights, there is certainly no shortage of things to do, but today I’m going to be breaking down my top 10 things to do in Paris. Most are not off the beaten path, and that is because these experiences were SO special to me that I think every person should have them as well.
Paris is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world! Having visited many times throughout my life, and at various different stages, I can definitely say that each time has been unique in its own right, even if I did the same activities more than once. Take a look at my faves and let me know how these stack up to yours!
1. Have Tea at Café de Flore
Café de Flore is one of Paris’s oldest coffee houses and has been a staple of French culture since the 1880s. A popular hub for famous artists and philosophers including Pablo Picasso, the café has become a must-see for anyone who loves history. It is also home to the best quiche I have ever had in my life.
2. Spend a Day at the Louvre
Some may call this stop obligatory but I call it a gift. If you’re a fan of museums, art, and/or history, you cannot skip this. I have been multiple times and have still not seen everything. Home to the Mona Lisa (severely overrated in my opinion), the Louvre is known as one of the top museums in the world. No matter what your preferred style or taste, there is something for everyone here. Pro Tip: Buy your tickets in advance! This will save you A LOT of time when you arrive.
3. Eiffel Tower at Night
After sun down, for 10 minutes on the hour, every hour, the famous Eiffel Tower twinkles. This light show can be seen throughout the year up until 1am (and 2am during the summer months). It’s one of the most magical and breathtaking things to behold, even if you are watching from your hotel room window or a rooftop restaurant.
4. Visit a Chateau (such as Versailles)
France is famous for its massive castles (or chateaux). The most famous of all is Versailles but there are also hundreds of others around France, several of which are an easy day trip via train from Paris proper. While these are not located directly in the heart of the city, they are definitely a can’t miss attraction for anyone visiting Paris.
5. Dinner at the Moulin Rouge
Made famous by the popular 2001 film of the same name, the Moulin Rouge in Paris is an entertainment spectacular I will never ever forget. A cross between a burlesque, can-can, and “elevated” peep show, make this performance hard to describe. Be prepared for a bit of nudity, but dare I call it “tasteful”? As someone who is not completely comfortable viewing nudity in pubic, I actually found this to be really quite beautiful. Not only that, but attendees are encouraged to come in formal attire and most adhere to this, making it a very fancy night out.
6. Visit a Local Bakery Once a Day
There is a bakery on every corner of every street in Paris – no joke. And each one is better than the last. Grabbing a croissant each morning from the nearest bakery is a GREAT way to save money on your vacation while not sacrificing flavor or culture. Some days I even went back for lunch!
7. Tour the Notre Dame (yes, even now)
A year ago, this national treasure underwent an abrupt and horrifying fire. Millions watched in terror as it seemed this gorgeous cathedral might vanish forever. Thankfully that was not the case and now almost a year later, it will once again be open for visitation. Don’t miss your chance to see the breathtaking stained glass windows and ribbed vaulting of this historic landmark.
8. Dinner Down the Seine River
There is nothing more relaxing or romantic than dinner by candle light along the Seine. Time it right and you could set sail at sunset. This is one of the best things I’ve ever done in Paris. There are several companies who offer dinner cruises, so do a little research and go with the one that best fits your budget and needs.
9. Go Shopping along the Champs Elysees
The Champs Elysees is like the Rodeo Drive of Paris but what makes it unique is the French style. France has always been known for setting the trends in fashion and here you can see the latest styles firsthand in all their decedent splendor. If mainstream isn’t really your style, check out Rue de Passy, known for its smaller “boutique” stores.
10. Visit an Old Bookstore or Outdoor Bookstand
The French love to read and there is no shortage of amazing books to choose from. If you love to read and are a collector of old/vintage books, then Paris is your city! Many of the books in second hand bookstores or at the bookstands along the street are actually in English too. During our most recent trip, we found an old complete set of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables for $100. Talk about a collector’s item!
