When it comes to traveling the world in search of Disney adventure, there’s nothing better than discovering a brand new ride in a country I’ve never been to before. I love seeing how the magic of Disney is the same wherever you go but the execution is always slightly different. Hong Kong is no exception to this and there are a PLETHORA of really wonderful one-of-a-kind rides here. In fact, I think this is one of the most underrated parks in the world.
One of the unique things about this park is the way Marvel has been incorporated into Tomorrowland. Two of our favorite rides here in the U.S. have been transformed to feature Marvel characters. The first is the “Iron Man Experience”. It’s basically the same infrastructure as Star Tours but the story features Iron Man! I liked this ride A LOT but it did make me feel sick (same as Star Tours does though, LOL. I’m getting older and simulators are taking their toll).
The second Marvel themed ride provides a nice segue into my top 5 countdown. Coming in at number…
5 – ANT-MAN & THE WASP: NANO BATTLE!
This ride is new as of March 31 and it is FUN. It’s basically a souped-up Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters though I didn’t care one bit that it was using the same track because the build was incredible and a lot more fun than the original blaster ride we’ve all come to know and love. It feels more interactive than Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters because of the digital overlays on the targets throughout the ride. Also, Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily recorded several different messages for this attraction which makes you feel like you’re a part of the movies. (Fun fact: Ant-Man is my favorite character in the Marvel Universe… I know, that makes me weird.) I only wish I had had more time to ride this over and over and over.
4 – JUNGLE RIVER CRUISE
What’s better than taking a Jungle River Cruise through AN ACTUAL JUNGLE? The first thing you notice when you fly into Hong Kong is the lush landscape. It’s a really stunning place with temperatures that will leave you panting. So when I stepped onto my Jungle River Cruise boat, I genuinely felt like I was going on a real jungle cruise. This ride is also fantastic for the humor. Depending on your “skipper”, you may just be rolling with laughter. (It’s also slightly different from any of the other versions of Jungle Cruise around the world).
3 – IT’S A SMALL WORLD
It’s a Small World is one of my favorite rides of all time and I love comparing all of the different versions around the world. When I went on this version during my very first trip to Hong Kong last year, I thought it was the best version in the world. (That was until I finally made it to Tokyo). That said, this one is unique in its own right. The way that the “world” is divided up is unique focusing on various different Asian subsets (makes sense, it’s in Asia) vs. Asia as a whole. There are also some surprise characters that make an appearance. I personally think you can’t go to a Disney theme park and not get your fix of “It’s a Small World” which is landing this at #3 for me.
2 – BIG GRIZZLY MOUNTAIN RUNAWAY MINE CARS
If Expedition Everest, Big Thunder Mountain, and the Country Bears all had a baby – it would be this ride. DANG it is fun. So fun in fact, that this ride definitely makes my overall top 10 Disney rides of all time list. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, so that’s all I’m going to say. Just make sure you ride it more than once because it’s that good.
1 – MYSTIC MANOR
This ride is reason enough to visit Hong Kong Disneyland. It fully lives up to its reputation. I would not consider this a version of Haunted Mansion but some do just because of the exterior and the queues. The characters featured in the ride are unique to Hong Kong (and don’t really fall within the world of “Disney” as we know it) but on my most recent trip, a friend of mine pointed out an easter egg tying this ride to the Tower of Terror ride in Tokyo Disney Sea, which blew my mind. Mystic Manor is trackless and goes through multiple rooms, allowing a story to really unfold before you. That was the most beautiful thing about this ride to me. And DANG, it’s just that good. I want everyone in my life to experience this at least once and when you do, please let me know how it was for you.
That’s it for my top 5 Hong Kong Disneyland rides. Do you agree with this list? Anything you would add? Let me know in the comments below!
