Visit the Filming Locations from Hocus Pocus 2
This Halloween season there is nothing more exciting than the long awaited release of the sequel to the 1993 classic, Hocus Pocus! And in celebration of this auspicious occasion, I took a little trip to Massachusetts and Rhode Island to visit some of the filming locations from Hocus Pocus 2.
In today’s post, I’m going to share some of these locations for all my fellow Hocus Pocus-lovers, so you too can check out the places featured in the film!
So without further ado, I bring you the filming locations from Hocus Pocus 2.
Hocus Pocus 2 Shooting Locations in Providence, RI
Interior High School Scenes – La Salle Academy
Address: 612 Academy Avenue, Providence, RI
Details: Private academy. If you visit, be respectful and do not trespass.
One of the first locations was at the famous preparatory high school, La Salle Academy in Providence. Its sprawling exterior and interior provided the perfect place to shoot some of the high school scenes in Hocus Pocus 2. While the opening exterior scenes were mainly shot at the location below, the rest were likely shot here.
Exterior High School Scenes – Moses Brown School
Address: 250 Lloyd Ave, Providence, RI 02906
Details: Private school in Providence, Rhode Island. If you’re going to visit, I recommend going on the weekend or when school is not in session so as not to disturb the students.
As mentioned, the most memorable exterior High School scene (at the beginning the movie) was filmed at Moses Brown School, one of the oldest preparatory schools in the country. This prestigious establishment was founded in 1784 by Quaker abolitionist, Moses Brown.
Newman Cemetery – 2nd Cemetery where Billy is Buried
Address: Southwest corner of Newman and Pawtucket Avenues, Rumford, RI 02916 (across the street from Newman Congregational Church)
Details: Public Cemetery
Some things never change… Like poor Billy Butcherson… being resurrected (yet again). This time the scene was shot in the Newman Cemetery across from Newman Congregational church. It’s one of the oldest cemeteries in the state and is a historical landmark. It’s also massive and a great place to walk around – if you like checking out cemeteries.
Cassie’s House – Residential Neighborhood
Address: Benefit Street, Providence RI
Details: Private residential street
Benefit Street is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Providence, RI. Its “mile of history” provided the perfect location to film the exterior street scenes outside of Cassie’s house.
Town Square – 51 Touro Street & Washington Square
Address: 51 Touro Street and Washington Square, Newport, RI
Details: Public Square
The last location on our list is the town square of Newport, Rhode Island which is where all of the main town scenes were shot including the big musical number featuring the 3 witches and the drag talent show, as well as the flash mob, and the Olde Salem Magic Shoppe. While almost all of these settings were built specifically for the shoot (and no longer there), it’s still cool to see where Hollywood made magic.
BONUS:
The Cranston Street Armory
Address: 310 Cranston Street, Providence, RI
Details: Closed to the public
The Cranston Street Armory is a historic building in Providence, Rhode Island, that is large enough inside to build multiple sets. This was where the team filmed all of the woods scenes and the broom flying scenes, amongst others.
The Witch House – Salem
Address: 310 1/2 Essex Street, Salem, MA
Details: Private historical museum
While all of Hocus Pocus 2 was filmed in Providence, the Reverend’s home in the flashback sequence looked VERY familiar – so familiar that I did a double take! For anyone who’s been to Salem, you’ll recognize the famous Witch House. If you have time to tour this historical landmark, you’ll learn a lot about the Salem Witch Trials. This house was actually home to the Judge (Jonathan Corwin) famous for his decisions in the Salem Witch Trials from 1640-1718.
That concludes my tour of the Rhode Island shooting locations from Hocus Pocus 2. I hope you found this post interesting. If you know of any additional filming locations that weren’t listed, please drop a comment below.
